Notification on News items?

I noticed that I keep missing the announcements that are made on the main page of the Fly Fishing project. I thought the project was done and I learned that is is not. The announcement was made in the News section of that page. Even when the project was on I kept missing those announcements.
I think there are two reasons for this. One, when I go to SR I land in My Dashboard, and I usually don't go to the main page. I also did not receive any email notifications of changes not that page; I'm not sure if the option doesn't exist or if the people creating the announcements skipped a step somewhere.
My suggestion is that I would want to know when announcements are made on the main page to the whole group a little more directly. An email would be great.

What would you think of the idea of replacing the news items on the dashboard and project overview pages with forum topics (with notifications) instead?

That would be great. We could have a forum topic for general announcements, and we kill two birds with one stone since we would have the forum for other things as well.
And auto notifications would just be the cherry on top.
