% Complete Bar

This is a bit trickier....but a fun one....it has been suggested by our Production Coordinator that the % complete bar be updatable via click....for instance...if you could just single click and it would give you some type of slide to adjust progress....
A simple way of updating your progress from your dashboard or the tasks tab....perhaps a flash mechanism....maybe that's too complex, maybe it's something like an AJAX image map that updates based upon where you click?????

Followup question for you -- [there is always a followup question, isn't there ;-) ]
Would you not want a % complete change to be accompanied by some kind of status note or update? Or perhaps a WIP submittal? (Note that when you 'Submit Work' on a task, you can change the % complete at that time.)

Also, you would only be able to change the % complete on tasks, not sequences or projects -- would that inconsistency in the UI be confusing to users?

    Thanks,
    Cameron

I think it's just about the TASKS....(Sorry for the lack of clarification)
I do see where you're coming from....once you get to 100% you want to make sure you have a submission to go along with it...but the way it is laid out, it feels like submission is a separate, next step.....you can still make it once you have marked your TASK complete...and every other % complete bar will auto-update (shots, seqs, etc).

I don't think of it as being inconsistent..... because one is assigned to you to report on.....and the others are under different tabs with no way to update....and don't apply to you as an artist being low on the totem pole.

Nobody thus far has said...."Why can't I update the sequences progress bar?"
I don't even think they will notice... management maybe....

I have another question relative to the other post about setting task status and end date when the % complete is set to 100% and vice versa

If we allow people to click on the % completion bar, and then set the % complete -- if the user selects 100%, should we also set the end_date and task status to (Complete) here as well?

I'm starting to think not -- that if we allow this, it should just set the % complete and no more -- for reasons that I will lay out in the other post.

In thinking more about this...I've just now noticed that the task submittal is pointless for us (EGM) we have been submitting everything under the shot submittal....it still seems to work out the same...maybe even easier......I think that is why we may not be on the same page on this....we don't get down to that intricate level of knowledge.. I see the reason for it....but it would be nice to still have both options...I have been finding that unless it appears visually linear most of my users get lost with all the options...

I agree with your post about the NOT COMPLETE at 100% accidents do happen.....I can see someone clicking it and oops, gone!

One way to think about Submittals on Shots vs. Tasks, is that tasks are where all the work happens. Its where you assign work and set schedules. Its where we will eventually track time. Its basically what your artists do. Compositors and supervisors work more at the shot level.

Some companies have their artists work tasks and Submit Work on tasks to a team lead. Things like roto mattes and detailed modeling tasks are reviewed by a lead. Then they let the compositors do the Submit Work on shots to the VFX supervisor.

That way, team leads and supervisors can both check their work lists, approve or reject work, and/or forward submittals on to higher level management if needed.

Have you see the 'Submit Work' tutorial?

Maybe that would be good for your users or we could record something more customized.

One of the problems of being a smaller shop....we don't have that many people in the chain of command. So it's more or less over-kill for us...we can all work in the scope of a shot and not have to navigate one more level deeper to get the same result...
Process or no...it still works for now. I know how it should work...it just doesn't need to be that complex for little ol us. If time tracking comes into play however...we will change our ways...
